ACM vs Painted Wood (MDO) Storefront Signs: Which Exterior Sign Fits Your Business?

You know you need a sign out front. You know it has to survive sun and rain. Now you are staring at two very different options: a sleek metal panel or a painted wood sign. Both can carry your logo in crisp, dimensional 3D lettering, and both are built for the outdoors. So which one actually fits your business?

At Skyline Laser, we build both styles in our Pennsylvania workshop. If you are weighing one against the other, this guide compares our ACM metal signs and our painted MDO wood signs side by side, so you can choose with confidence before you order.

First, What Are ACM and MDO?

Both materials are designed to be the backing of an exterior sign, but they come from completely different worlds.

  • ACM (aluminum composite material) is an aluminum composite sign panel. On our Custom ACM Metal Signs, the panel is painted black or white and serves as a clean, modern backdrop for your laser-cut logo.
  • MDO (Medium Density Overlay) is an exterior-rated plywood with a weather-resistant, resin-impregnated fiber face. It is engineered to resist moisture and edge-swelling, which is exactly why it is used for outdoor signs and billboards. Our 1/2" MDO backings are custom painted to match your brand.

In both cases, the backing is only half the sign. The other half is your 3D logo, laser cut and mounted on top for real depth that a flat printed sign cannot match. For any sign going outside, that logo should be acrylic: our acrylic lettering is the only lettering we rate for exterior use.

ACM Metal Signs: Sleek, Modern, and Built for Commercial Exteriors

Our ACM sign is built for durability and is ideal for exterior commercial use. Here is how it comes together:

  • Your logo: precision laser cut from 1/4" acrylic or 1/8" specialty acrylic, in brushed, mirrored, glossy, or matte finishes and the color(s) of your choice.
  • The panel: a painted aluminum composite panel in black or white.
  • The mounting: pre-drilled corner holes and standoff hardware are included for a clean, professional wall mount.

The result is a crisp, contemporary look. A mirrored or brushed logo on a black or white metal panel reads as polished and corporate, which makes ACM a natural fit for offices, clinics, tech companies, and modern retail.

Choose ACM if: you want a clean metal look, a classic black or white background works for your brand, and you like the idea of hardware that is ready to go out of the box.

Painted MDO Wood Signs: Custom Color and Custom Shape

If ACM is about sleek simplicity, MDO is about flexibility. Because we paint the backing ourselves, you are not limited to black or white. You can match your exact brand colors, and you can choose the shape of the sign itself.

We offer two versions on the same 1/2" exterior-rated MDO backing, but only one of them belongs outside: the version with acrylic lettering.

For Your Storefront: MDO with 3D Acrylic Lettering

Our Wood Painted Backing with 3D Acrylic Lettering pairs the painted MDO base with a logo cut from 1/4" or 1/8" premium optical-grade acrylic. You can choose high-gloss solid colors, matte finishes, or mirrored gold, silver, and rose gold. If your logo has multiple elements, we can even mix finishes, such as a mirrored gold icon with matte black text.

The backing comes in standard black or white, or you can select custom painted to match your brand. Shapes include rectangles, circles, squares, or a custom contour cut that follows the silhouette of your logo.

Indoor Only: MDO with 3D Wood Lettering

Our Wood Painted Backing with 3D Wood Lettering uses a logo laser cut from 1/4" wood composite. We paint both the backing and the lettering in the colors you choose, and you can share hex codes or paint brand names in your order notes. We confirm every color with you during proofing.

Because the lettering is wood, this sign is for interior use only. It is not a storefront sign. Its uniform, painted, artisan feel is a great fit for lobbies, showrooms, and reception walls. If you want that brand-matched MDO look out front, choose acrylic lettering, which also gives you a smoother, more modern finish with mirrored and high-gloss options.

Choose MDO if: your brand colors matter, you want a shape other than a standard panel, or you want a warmer, more handcrafted look on your storefront. Just pair it with acrylic lettering for any outdoor install.

Mounting and Timeline Considerations

However you decide, plan the install before you order:

  • Standoffs are the outdoor go-to. ACM signs ship with standoff hardware. For our MDO signs, we highly recommend standoffs for outdoor use, especially on brick or siding. They give a high-end "floating" look and keep the sign slightly off the wall, allowing airflow and helping prevent moisture buildup behind the sign.
  • Give the paint time to cure. Standard production on our exterior MDO signs is 3 weeks. That time lets the multiple coats of paint and finish fully cure so your sign has the most durable seal possible before it ships.
  • Expect honest weathering. Like any exterior product, a painted sign may show some natural weathering over many years, but our MDO signs are built to keep their professional look far longer than standard painted wood.

Three Questions to Help You Decide

  1. How important is exact brand color? If your background needs to match a specific brand color, go with MDO. If black or white works, ACM is a clean, simple choice.
  2. What shape do you picture? A tidy rectangular panel points to ACM. A circle, square, or contour cut that follows your logo points to MDO.
  3. What feel fits your storefront? Modern and corporate leans ACM. Warm, artisan, or highly branded leans MDO with acrylic lettering. (If you also want a painted wood-letter sign for your lobby, that is a great indoor companion piece.)
