Custom Wood Business Signs: Stained Birch vs Painted MDO vs Reverse Wood Burned

Wood has a way of making a business feel established. A wood logo sign behind your reception desk or beside your front door says "we build things to last" before anyone reads a word. But "wood sign" covers a lot of ground, and the wood you choose changes the look, the colors you can use, and where the sign can hang.

At Skyline Laser, we laser cut and hand-finish three main styles of custom wood business signs in our Pennsylvania workshop: stained birch, custom-painted MDO, and reverse wood burned. This guide explains how each one works, what it looks best in, and which versions are made for the outdoors.

The Three Wood Sign Styles at a Glance

  • Stained birch: a 1/2" birch plywood backing, hand-sanded and stained so the natural grain shows through, with a raised 3D logo mounted on top. Warm, natural, and made for interiors.
  • Painted MDO: a 1/2" MDO (Medium Density Overlay) backing, a plywood with a smooth, resin-impregnated face that holds paint beautifully. It is custom painted, so it can match your exact brand colors.
  • Reverse wood burned: a single wood panel where the laser engraves away the background, leaving your logo raised, and then the background is hand-torched for deep contrast. Rustic, textured, and one of a kind.

Stained Birch: Natural Grain for Lobbies and Offices

If you want your sign to feel warm and organic, stained birch is the classic choice. The grain stays visible through the stain, so the backing reads as real wood rather than a flat color. We offer two versions, depending on what you want your logo made of.

Stained Birch with 3D Acrylic Lettering

Our Wood Stained Backing with 3D Acrylic Lettering mounts 1/4" or 1/8" optical-grade acrylic onto a hand-stained birch base. Acrylic finishes include high-gloss, matte, mirrored gold, silver, or rose gold, and brushed metallics, so your logo can contrast sharply with the wood grain. Shapes include circle, rectangle, square, or a custom contour that follows your logo. Sawtooth hangers are included, and designer standoffs in black, silver, or gold float the sign 1 inch off the wall.

Stained Birch with 3D Layered Wood Lettering

For a more uniform, all-wood look, our Custom Wood Business Signs with 3D Layered Wood Lettering layer 1/4" wood composite lettering onto a stained 1/2" birch base. Choose from 9 designer stains for the backing, and standard or custom paint colors for the logo. If your logo has very fine details, our designers will suggest small adjustments during proofing so the finished piece is both beautiful and durable.

Where it works: reception desks, lobbies, boutiques, studios, and executive offices. Both stained birch signs are for interior use only. Birch is a natural material that can react to moisture and big temperature swings.

Painted MDO: Your Exact Brand Colors on Wood

Stain lets the wood show. Paint lets your brand show. MDO has a smooth, resin-impregnated face that resists edge-swelling and gives paint a flawless base, which makes it the right pick when your brand guidelines call for a specific color behind your logo.

Painted MDO with 3D Wood Lettering (Interior Only)

Our Wood Painted Backing with 3D Wood Lettering pairs a custom-painted 1/2" MDO backing with 1/4" laser-cut wood composite lettering. We paint both the backing and the letters in the colors you choose, using UV-resistant paints. You can send hex codes or paint brand names, or just upload your logo and we will confirm colors during proofing. Because the lettering is wood, this sign is for interior use only.

Painted MDO with 3D Acrylic Lettering (Interior or Exterior)

Need a painted wood sign for your storefront? Our Wood Painted Backing with 3D Acrylic Lettering uses exterior-rated MDO for the backing and acrylic for the logo, so it is suitable for both interior and exterior use. Acrylic options include high-gloss solids, matte, and mirrored gold, silver, and rose gold, and you can mix finishes, such as a mirrored gold icon with matte black text. For outdoor installs, we recommend standoffs, which allow airflow behind the sign.

Standard production time for both painted MDO signs is 3 weeks, which gives the multiple coats of paint time to fully cure before your sign ships. For a deeper comparison of painted MDO and metal for storefronts, see ACM vs Painted Wood (MDO) Storefront Signs.

Reverse Wood Burned: Rustic 3D Relief with Hand-Torched Contrast

A reverse burned sign is not built from layers. Instead, our laser engraves away the background around your logo, so your logo stays at the original height of the wood while the background recedes. Then we finish each piece by hand with a torch, creating a dark char that makes the natural wood of your logo stand out. Every sign is sealed with a clear coat, so the char will not rub off on hands or walls.

Because the wood grain reacts differently to the flame every time, no two signs are ever identical. Both of our burned signs carry a lifetime guarantee on artisan craftsmanship.

Reverse Wood Burned (Birch)

Our Reverse Wood Burned sign is crafted from premium birch, chosen for its light, consistent grain, so the contrast between the natural logo and the blackened background is sharp. Every order includes 2 to 3 sawtooth hangers, with optional gold, silver, or black standoffs that float the sign about an inch off the wall. You will work 1-on-1 with our graphic designer, Foster, to make sure your logo is set up for the best burn contrast.

Custom Wood Burned Signs (Birch or 1" Pine, Interior or Exterior)

Our Custom Wood Burned Signs use the same reverse-engraving and hand-torching technique on high-grade birch or 1" thick pine, and they are made for exterior or interior use. During proofing, you can choose a "Light Toast" for more visible grain or a "Deep Char" for maximum black-and-white contrast.

Where it works: rustic offices, modern studios, branding photography backdrops, and anywhere you want branding that doubles as artwork.

Which Wood Sign Is Right for You?

  1. Do you want the wood grain to show? Choose stained birch or a reverse burned sign. If you would rather see a solid brand color, choose painted MDO.
  2. Do you need an exact brand color behind your logo? Painted MDO is the one to pick, because we paint the backing to your colors.
  3. Is the sign going outside? Only two of our wood signs are made for exterior use: the painted MDO sign with acrylic lettering and the Custom Wood Burned Signs. Every wood-lettered sign is interior only. For all of our outdoor-ready options, read Outdoor Business Signs: Which Custom 3D Logo Signs Can Go Outside?
  4. Do you want shine or a rustic finish? Acrylic lettering on birch or MDO adds gloss and mirrored metallics. Wood lettering and reverse burned signs feel more handcrafted and rustic.

See the Wood Before You Decide

Stain colors and painted finishes look different in your own lighting than they do on a screen. Our Material Sample Kit includes all 9 designer stains on birch, a sample of our exterior-rated MDO, and mirrored, brushed, and solid color acrylic swatches, plus a 1/8" vs 1/4" thickness comparison. Kits are kept in stock and typically ship within 24 to 48 hours via USPS, and each one includes a coupon code that offsets the cost of the samples when you place your sign order.
